The LabPlant team develops original studies regarding physiology and biochemistry of higher plants subjected to abiotic stress conditions. In a wide sense, our interest is elucidating key  physiological processes involved with plant tolerance, especially regarding the physiological mechanisms associated with photosynthetic efficiency maintaining under adverse environments.

More specifically, we are devoted in the elucidation of relationships between photosynthesis efficiency and associated biochemical processes. Among these, the antioxidant protection is the most important. Photosynthesis is a very complex process that involve several biophysical and biochemical reactions, which are linked to several others such as antioxidant metabolism into chloroplasts.

The set of these reactions operates in a coordinate way in order to guarantee a high photosynthetic efficiency. Thus, we are interested in understand the role of the most important parts of that metabolic network in plants subjected to salt stress. In other words, we are interested in find the major important reactions and their respective mechanism that could confer salt tolerance in higher plants.

Also we are interested in answering how is the cellular functioning at the plant level when exposed to salt stress. We expect that our results could contribute to enhancement of plant science and crop production under adverse conditions.

Labplant activities

We expect that our results could contribute to enhancement of plant science and crop production under adverse conditions.

Our Mission:

1) Generation of new knowledge;

2) Formation of doctorates & masters in science;
3) Development of post-doc researchers;
4) Scientific initiation of undergraduate students.

Current focus

We aim to elucidate new biochemical/molecular  mechanisms  involved in the tolerance of plants to abiotic stresses, especially related to the following biological processes:

1) Photosynthesis;
2) Oxidative/anti-oxidant  metabolism;
3) Photorespiration;
4) C & N metabolism.
